friday flow: october daze

Oct 14, 2011 by christie

hello friends! is it just me, or have the past few weeks been particularly dreamy? with gorgeous sun-soaked weather and the stir of a new season, i just can’t help myself. it’s as if the air is charged with some invisible, electric spark.

take a break this weekend to stretch out on a beach blanket, pedal your bike around town, stroll through the park or people-watch from the window of your favorite coffee shop. and don’t be surprised if that flush of contentment in a fully embraced present sneaks up on you, too.

2. Black Hills – Gardens & Villa

3. Forever – Timmy Curran

4. The Summer We Raised You - Years Around The Sun

friday flow: dad’s vinyl throwback

Aug 26, 2011 by christie

with August almost at an end, I’m thinking a classic 1970s summer jam is just right for today’s Friday Flow.

i’ve raided the LP album stash to throw down a weekend-worthy soundtrack even the parents will be stoked to reminisce… just be prepared for playbacks of your dad’s band roadie days rivaling an episode of VH1 Storytellers.

* while you’re at it, be sure to cruise the vintage-inspired fine art from latest my Etsy crush, elgarbo Art. the shop’s collection spotlights digitally aged nature and surf art prints like this one that range from 4×4 to 12×18 (hot tip: don’t miss the BOGO sale on any 8×8 or 8×10 print).

here’s to a great weekend, friends! xo

Friday Flow: Dad’s Vinyl Throwback

1. Go Your Own Way – Fleetwood Mac

2. Do It Again - Steely Dan

3. One of These Nights - The Eagles

4. Show Me The Way [Live] - Peter Frampton

5. Layla - Derek and the Dominoes

friday flow: mazatlan mashup

Jul 22, 2011 by christie

hi friends! um, has it really been a whole month since my last post? no wonder i’ve felt so disconnected from anything unrelated to immediate/perfunctory obligations of the day-job kind. to say that i’ve been a bit busy lately is probably the biggest understatement in recent recollection – more like involuntarily engulfed. see, this is exactly the problem with that whole “work-for-a-living” thing – it just really cramps my task list of everything else i’d rather be doing.

let’s get back to it, shall we – and what better way than with a new Friday Flow soundtrack?

this week’s playlist is inspired by a few friends’ recent journey to a favorite spot on Mexico’s west coast:  with a sixteen-mile stretch of golden shoreline edging clean Pacific surf and the best seafood i’ve tasted anywhere, Mazatlan should be at the top of your Fall 2011 Get-On-It Getaway List, hands-down.

need more convincing? how about a thriving, neoclassical historic district; open-air palapa restaurants on the sand; a swinging music & arts scene; jungle canopy ziplines, island outpost eco-reserves, whale-watching; and award-winning agave (forget the tequila you thought you knew) courtesy of the 120-year-old Los Osuna estate.

Quiksilver just hosted a major ASP tournament here in June, putting Mazatlan’s underground surf renown on the international map. oh, and it just so happens to be the home of Pacifico beer. Viva!

Friday Flow: Mazatlan Mashup

1. Lleva Me el CompasGipsy Kings

2. Como La CigarraAbdias Ernesto Garcia

3. Dejame Entrar - Carlos Vives

4. Aqui No SeraOzomatli

5. Bem QuererSeu Jorge

friday flow: aloha-ahhhhh…

May 20, 2011 by christie

oh friday, at long last you’re finally here – bringing the promise of two whole days without email overflow, blah-business-casual workwear and speaker phone reverb. we can hardly wait for the hours to melt into the five o’clock glow… it’s just never soon enough.

which is why i’m stoked to initiate this favorite weekday in its new tradition. enter The Friday Flow, serving up a fifteen-minute block of musical bliss to drift away into weekend freedom – even if saturday is still just a distant shimmer on the horizon.

this week, it’s aloha from the Pacific with the easy vibe of hawaiian island & reggae tunes.  just try to keep the same frantic friday pace (hint: it’s impossible). go with it – yep, just sway on into summer. ahhh… i can’t help but wanderlust for open-window drives through lush taro fields, beach bungalows and lava flow basins – all with a jewel-tone backdrop of green volcanic peaks, blue waves and red clay.

of course, while the real thing is a faraway fantasy for most of us (or very faraway, in my case), the good news is that along with this friday’s playlist, you can plug into the island groove any day of the week. bookmark hawaiian radio station KCCN FM 100 and listen live online for top hits straight out of honolulu. love.

Paddle out into the Shore Bliss Friday Flow with this lineup, courtesy of GrooveShark.

1. This is the LifeKolohe Kai

2. Midnight Hour – SDIB

3. Jowenna (Sweet Hawaiian Girl)Fiji

4. I’m YoursThe Green Band

5. Beach in Hawaii - Ziggy Marley
